When mixed gases flow through a polymer membrane, they separate based on their different permeation rates due to variations in solubility and diffusion coefficients. Gases like water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide with faster permeation rates pass through and get enriched on one side, while gases like nitrogen and argon with slower permeation rates gather on the other side. This process achieves gas separation. When using pressurized purified air, it enriches inert gases like nitrogen into high-purity nitrogen-rich gas, removing oxygen-enriched air from the permeate side. Compared to other methods, membrane nitrogen enrichment is advantageous due to its simplicity, continuous operation, and stability.
